How to calculate the remaining time in a playlist you are halfway through
Halfway through a playlist, the question flips: not “how long is this?” but “how much is left?” The answer is the total minus what you have already watched — and the tricky part is the video you are partway through.
Count finished videos fully
Add the full length of every video you have completed. Those are done, and their minutes are banked.
Handle the part-watched video carefully
If you stopped 20 minutes into a 45-minute video, 25 minutes remain — not 45, and not zero. This is the step people skip, and it is why remaining-time guesses are usually too high.
Then subtract from the total
Remaining = total − watched. If you do not know the total, add the unwatched videos instead — same answer, no total needed.
Worked example
Take three videos — 10:00, 12:30 and 1:05:20. Added together they are 1 hour, 27 minutes and 50 seconds (1:27:50). Suppose you finished the 10:00 and 12:30 videos and watched 30:00 of the 1:05:20 video. Watched = 52:30, so remaining = 1:27:50 − 52:30 = 35:20. At 1.5x, that remaining stretch takes about 23:33.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the playlist total to find the remainder?
No. Adding the unwatched videos (plus the unwatched part of the current one) gives the same number.
What about videos I plan to skip?
Leave them out of the remaining total entirely. A plan that counts videos you will never watch is not a plan.
How does speed change the remainder?
Divide the remaining time by the speed, just like the total. A 35:20 remainder at 1.5x is about 23:33.
Paste your video durations and get the total, the time at faster speeds, and the days to finish.
